  16. Messengers served for almost four decades as a training ground
  17. for top musicians; of lung cancer; in New York City. A veteran
  18. of the Fletcher Henderson and Billy Eckstine big bands, Blakey
  19. worked with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, and founded the
  20. Messengers in the 1940s. Pianist Keith Jarrett, saxophonist
  21. Jackie McLean and trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Wynton
  22. Marsalis were a few of the artists he nurtured into stardom.
